Church services were held here yesterday, which is always an event that requires a lot of preparation work. We set up the church benches in our basement for the services. The benches, dishes for meals, and other supplies needed to hold a service are stored in a wagon which goes from place to place – wherever the services are going to be held. Services are usually around three hours long. Afterwards the menfolk set up four tables with every table sitting 16 people. Then the women all pitch in and help get the tables set. It is nice to have most of those dishes we need for lunch stored in containers in the bench wagon. Our menu was coffee, tea, homemade wheat and white bread, bologna, cheese spread, peanut butter spread, dill and sweet pickles, red beets, sweet and hot peppers, butter, homemade jam, and sugar, pumpkin, and butterscotch chip cookies.

Pain of dental malpractice

Jill Webb, a partner at Phillips Law Office in the Loop, has handled many dental malpractice cases. She agrees with Baxter's assessment and believes that more patients would file malpractice claims if they knew how.

"I don't think consumers are aware they have the ability and right to report problems to the state authorities" at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Webb said. Katie English had no idea she could file such a complaint.

When a patient does initiate a complaint against a dentist, state regulators look into it. If they find evidence of malpractice, a dentist may face a reprimand, fine or probation. His or her license also may be suspended or revoked.

Patients may decide to sue, but this route is more difficult.

Unlovable? Not at all! Just don't call rutabagas cute

Rutabagas acquired a bad name for themselves during the Depression and World War II, when legions of children (my mother included) were forced to eat them. Decades later, their image problem hasn't gone away. It doesn't help that they're ugly: rough-skinned and yellow, with a waxy coating and a bulbous shape, they can weigh in at a hefty couple of pounds. No, there's nothing sleek, glossy or colorful about this cruciferous root veggie, which is related to the turnip.

But these days, rutabagas are getting downright chic. No one told the diners at Le Lupanar that rutabagas aren't fantastic. In fact, the Lower East Side French restaurant sells a lot of its braised lamb shoulder with rutabagas and baby carrots. “It's pretty popular," says host server Ian Daniel. “People really like rutabagas."

Michael Anthony, executive chef at Gramercy Tavern, says the idea of a rutabaga being unpalatable is “definitely a misconception." At Gramercy, the vegetable is sliced thick and cooked with carrots and turnips at a low temperature until sweet and soft.

LaVell Edwards: A world-class warrior

That he treats co-workers so well they never want to leave his side? That he can't drive either a golf ball or a car in a straight line? That he does goofy things, such as attend the wrong funeral? That he expected to get fired during most of his career? That he's the finest man you'll ever meet, one who has moved through life without making an enemy, even in the intense world of football? That no one can ever remember anyone saying a bad thing about him, which works out well since no one can remember his saying a bad thing about anyone, either? That, despite success and fame and a healthy income, he has lived in the same modest rambler for 33 years? That one of his real passions is music, and that he has this thing for "Amazing Grace," which could describe the way he has moved through the world? That those who work with him believe he has some mystical power to control the weather? That, of all the things you could say about him, the best is that his wife and three children gush on and on about him? Write a story about LaVell Edwards? We'd better get started .

Chandler opens $12.6 mil Tumbleweed rec center

A year and a half after the Chandler broke ground on the city's most ambitious recreation project, the $12.6 million, state-of-the-art Tumbleweed Recreation Center opens its doors today. For a two-month "soft-opening" period leading to the official grand opening, anyone can use the facility for free before normal fees begin. A second-floor running track offers the best view of the new center. Look down to the left and see the light-colored wood floor of the two-court gymnasium. Look to the right and there are dozens of cardio and weight machines. On the other side of the track, a view of the courtyard. And along the outside of the exterior walls, windows give runners a glimpse of distant mountains. .
