| Step-by-step ways to get ready for Turkey Day
There are only days until Thanksgiving. Most likely you know where you'll be to celebrate the holiday -- and you're already beginning to stress about how the meal will come together. As much as I'd like to put it off, I've found that the planning ahead really pays off, especially at this busy time of year. .
Final Hepatitis A Vaccine Clinic Set for Wednesday
Erie County officials say they will hold a fifth and final Hepatitis A vaccine clinic on Wednesday at ECC North from Noon-8p.m. "Based on turnout at our clinic Tuesday, members of my public health and emergency management teams feel the need exists to extend the clinic one additional and final day," said Erie County Executive Chris Collins. "This extension will give everyone who may have been exposed the opportunity to receive the vaccination." Tuesday at 5 p.m. health department officials said more than 8300 people had been vaccinated for Hepatitis A during free clinics. The clinics came in response to Friday's announcement that a produce employee at the Wegmans on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville tested positive for Hepatitis A. "The exposure for individuals...is low risk.
Gingered Pear Soup
To poach the pears, put the water, wine, sugar, orange slices, and cloves in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat; simmer for 5 minutes. Add the pears; simmer, turning occasionally, until they are tender, about 15 minutes (less if the pears are riper). Meanwhile, wrap the ginger, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, peppercorns, anise seed, and clove in cheesecloth and tie with a string. Pour the pear nectar into a small saucepan; add the cheesecloth bag. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat; cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Taste and let the broth steep if you want a stronger spice flavor. To serve, place a pear upright in the center of a dessert bowl. (Even the bottom of the pear, if necessary so it will stand up straight.) Ladle the soup into the bowl.
How do you drink yours?
That difference appears to impact on blood fats. A study presented to the American Heart Association two years ago by Dr Robert Superko, chair of molecular and preventative cardiology at the Fuqua Heart Centre, Atlanta, found that decaf coffee increased blood pressure and harmful LDL cholesterol. After three months, drinkers of decaf in the trial experienced a rise in fatty acids and cholesterol by 8 per cent. "It’s not caffeinated but decaf that might promote risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome," Superko says. "People should think twice about drinking it." Professor Bruce Goldberger, the study’s co-author, says decaf should not be mistaken for "caffeine-free". "If someone drinks five to ten cups of decaf coffee, the dose of caffeine could easily reach the level present in two cups of regular, caffeinated coffee," Goldberger says.
Peppadew™ Chicken in Coconut Milk Broth
1 Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan. Add the shallots, garlic, lemongrass, ginger and chicken. Sauté over a medium heat for about 3-4 minutes. 2 Add the coconut milk, chicken stock and Sweet Piquanté Peppers. Bring up to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is cooked and the sauce has reduced a little. 3 Add the noodles and chopped coriander to the wok or frying pan. Simmer for about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, if needed, then serve, garnished with coriander sprigs. Cooks tip: When you go shopping for Peppadew Sweet Piquanté Peppers, look out for small jars of prepared lemon grass, root ginger, garlic and coriander - just look for them with the spices or in the oriental foods section. Keep them in the refrigerator once opened, along with your opened jar of Sweet Piquanté Peppers, which will keep for up to 6 weeks.
New component design could reduce cost of proposed Facility for Rare ...
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have developed new state-of-the-art techniques that will lead to significant improvements in the performance of superconducting niobium cavities. Argonnes superconducting spoke cavities can operate at lower temperatures and at higher magnetic fields than previous designs, translating into a potential savings in the cost of a heavy-ion linear accelerator, such as that required for the proposed Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). An electromagnetic cavity consists of a space surrounded by an electrical conductor. When an electromagnetic (EM) wave that shares the cavitys natural frequency enters, it bounces back and forth within the cavity, creating a phenomenon known as resonance.
