Jerky Seasoning

 Jerky Seasoning Seasoning
Nuts about filberts ... er, hazelnuts

I wouldn't blame a Pacific Northwest newcomer for not appreciating hazelnuts. They're an acquired taste. Not as extreme a project as sushi or single-malt Scotch, of course.

But speaking as a relative newcomer (I've only been here 28 years) it took me a while to enjoy the unique, sweet yet smoky flavor.

All of my grower friends are going to grumble at me for saying that. Maybe they're missing out on a great advertising campaign: "Northwest hazelnuts! Like the people and the weather ... they'll grow on you."

Of course, now I love them. I mean, really love them. Especially when paired with foods that complement their character. Chocolate and hazelnuts is a classic combo. And when you throw raspberries into that mix, the experience can be dynamic.

Hazelnuts also merge beautifully with various cheeses, especially blue cheese and feta, as well as grilled salmon and other roasted meats.

A heads-up on what's happening at Dayton Intermediate School

So much has been happening at Dayton Intermediate School, that it's time to catch up on what's been and what's coming.

DIS hosts Math Night at 6 p.m. Thursday in the multipurpose room.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend to learn about various aspects of math instruction used at the school and how to integrate learning at home.

Hands-on learning creates fun and positive experiences for both parents and their children.

According to teacher Carol Goodfellow, who is spearheading the evening, there will be a "quick general session, then four breakout sessions."

Parents can choose three sessions, each about 20 minutes long.

Topics for the evening include "integrating math into daily life" which explores how to review math skills using shopping, cooking and family games; how to use technology at home to assist your child's learning; and how teachers use technology at school to "en-hance the learning experience."

DIS staff will describe a day in the life of a math student, including how teachers decide what to teach and materials used to get the most out of the learning.

Metro Police pulling over scores of motorists on I-65 south of ...

Even the occasional speeder would not garner traffic cop attention in the area, so it must be heavy with speeders. Since there is a traffic division, that even if they were not writing tickets, would not necessarily be out busting murders, crack deals and robbers, the complaining is directed at the wrong people/person. Instead of blaming the cops, why not blame the speeders?

By: EASTNASHVILLE on 10/3/07 Are we to blame the speeders for the increase in drug trafficking, prostitution, murders, hourly shootings?Seams according to Metro that most of the department places their priorities on traffic and not on more serious crimes.

By: tnsmith71 on 10/3/07 I must say that is sad that my choice for mayor did not make it to office or SERPAS would have been gone. SERPAS is a black eye to this great city.

French fry oil to be tested on Guantanamo fleet

Workers began testing technology on Friday to make their first batch of fuel, starting with used oil from the McDonald's restaurant. If all goes well, they will start testing the fuel on utility trucks and all-terrain vehicles by January and fuel local buses with biodiesel by June, said Fred Burns, energy and utilities manager for the base.

"When a bus goes down the street, you'll smell that french fry odor," Burns said.

Utility managers are unsure how strong the aroma might be but since deep-frying fish is popular on the base, faint might be better. Continued...

New cookbook features Yellowstone recipes

Perhaps the most unconventional recipe in Bozeman author Durrae Johanek's "Yellowstone National Park Cookbook" isn't really a recipe at all.

It's Joe Mitchell's Fried Trout a la Maytag.Mitchell began working as a "gear jammer," or tour bus driver, in the park in 1947. Over the next 35 years he took summer "leaves" from his jobs with General Motors and Northern Pacific Railroads to don his uniform, grab a bullhorn and lead tours, Johanek wrote. "One time, Joe was asked to take Lady Bird Johnson to the top of Mount Washburn."But the best part of his job was that he could spend every spare minute fishing in the park's blue-ribbon trout streams."Joe says, 'I had a frying pan made from an old Maytag washing machine lid. The aluminum lid was light and easy to carry for cooking (trout) and eating on the spot,' " Johanek wrote.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rihanna Goes Nude! Nas To Get Dropped Over N-Word ...

I do find it interesting that they take this stance, because all Def Jam rap albums are laced with variations of the N-Word. Still, an album of that name is sure a pretty powerful statement, however Nas intends to present it. Maybe this is the beginning of a different regime in rap? NOT! Tell me your thoughts on this matter.

If this is true, is Def Jam right or wrong for allegedly threatening Nas with independence if he names his album N***r? (Shout out to Clarence for the tip.)

UNCLE MURDER GOT SHOT!?

Yeah, he got shot, but it wasn't too TOO bad, because he's been doing interviews and radio. Still, getting shot is getting shot.

Cowboy poets bound for Alpine's annual festival

Cowboy poetry lets cowboys tell their story without spangled myth or Hollywood treatment. Tales told in verse about barbed wire, horses and campfire cooking mingle with tributes to friendship, wide-open spaces and philosophies of life that developed during days and nights of solitary work. It's an oral tradition of the American West.

More than 40 cowboy poets, storytellers and singers will mosey to Sul Ross State University in Alpine from Feb. 29 through March 2 for the 21st annual Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the country's second-oldest such festival.

Over two days, tales will be shared in themed sessions, which are called "recitations," in Sul Ross classrooms, conference rooms and auditoriums adorned for the event with mock cowboy camps and hand-painted backdrops depicting West Texas vistas.
