Cooking classes provide winter warmth

With winter upon us, there is no better way to warm the home than cooking up some tasty Turkish dishes.

But unless you frequent the homes of your Turkish neighbors often, and can understand the instructions, cooking Turkish food may feel like a scientific experiment. Most Turkish women shun the measuring cup or teaspoon, eyeball quantities, and make the flick of the wrist when tossing salt on salad look like magic. But here at the Turkish Daily News we decided to offer yet another suggestion. How about taking a cooking class? There are a variety of cooking classes available around town. From private lessons from experienced chefs, to affordable cooking classes in Sultanahmet, the sky is the limit when it comes to learning how to master Turkish cuisine and recreate memorable dining experiences at home for your friends and family.

Looking for a hit

After five years, Aztecs fans are still waiting to realize those expectations.

SDSU won a regular-season MWC championship in 2004, but the program's postseason drought has now reached 16 years. It hasn't been easy. In fact, it's been far more difficult than Gwynn ever imagined. His teams are 142-162.

Bachelor of Arts from Hope College in 2005 (double major in Studio Art and Business Management). Studied photography at Michigan State University (2005). In 2006, Finn received the title of Certified Professional Photographer (this is an elite program that requires passing a written exam and having a portfolio of actual client work reviewed by nationally recognized photographers). She also attended the Great Lakes Institute of Photography in 2007.

Hobbies and other interests: I am a self-proclaimed bookworm, although I haven't had time to cuddle up with a good book recently. I love sports - played soccer and swam when I was younger, and wished I could have played hockey. I content myself with being an avid sports fan and watching my nephews and niece during practices or games. I still love the piano, and although my piano hasn't made the move to our new home yet, I do enjoy playing when I can.

Settling for More or Less?

Throughout history, the Bedouin have served a variety of functions for the governments of their respective countries. Their knowledge of desert travel made their caravans the lifeline of many economies, a purpose they still serve today. When Libya opened its borders to the United Nations, the World Food Program contracted a Bedouin tribe to transport supplies for Sudanese refugees from the Mediterranean port of Benghazi down through the trackless desert to the camps of eastern Chad.

The Bedouin also have a long-standing reputation as warriors and have been recruited as mercenaries for generations. Even modern nations have relied on them for territorial security: The first king of modern Saudi Arabia, King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud, married a woman from the powerful Shumar tribe to secure his northern borders.

Career sideman Michael Ramos steps out with 'Charanga Cakewalk'

Michael Ramos bears not a single distinguishing characteristic of the revolutionary. He's a quiet, unassuming, trim, and well-dressed man who has spent almost his entire career in subordinate roles in a variety of groups. He's been a member of the Bodeans and the Rembrandts and played accordion and keyboards for Patty Griffin, John Mellencamp, Paul Simon, and, currently, Los Lonely Boys.

Yet on the long bus journeys and overnight hotel stays that take up far too great a percentage of a road musician's life, Ramos uses Pro Tools to transform all the music he's played and has grown up with into a unique synthesis that blows apart preconceptions. Ramos has released two albums as Charanga Cakewalk, which is what he calls the result. It's a conceptual group, like Steely Dan, consisting of Ramos and whatever friends, acquaintances, and heroes he manages to corral.
