Experts tell you how to get started

It's kind of like cooking: You have to let everything kind of blend together.

"You have to think of the forest floor in nature and how leaves and other vegetation drop, layer and decompose slowly in time. That's why the soil is usually quite fertile in areas with a lot of trees."

Cotton burr compost, which is typically available at local farm supply stores and nurseries, is considered a good ready-to-use product.

George also recommends obtaining an analysis of the soil before adding chemical fertilizers.

"I think an important thing that people don't often think about is that you really do need to have your soil tested. You can get test kits at garden stores, but you can go over to the Extension office and they will give you a paper bag and a mailer so that you can mail that to Texas A&M."

The cost can range from $10 to $25, depending on the extent of testing, and takes about two weeks for Texas A&M University.

FAMILY SERVICE: On Mothering Sunday, March 2, in St Peter's church at 10.30am. This is always a well attended service and gives the children a chance to thank their mothers by presenting them with posies during the service. OFF THE ROAD: Yet again a motorist must have been travelling at speed as they approached the bend on the B2116 near the entrance to Novington Lane last week. Lets hope that the driver, and passengers if there were any, escaped uninjured from the Land Rover that crashed into a field nearby. I have been told that it was Plumpton College students who were in the vehicle and it appears they were very lucky as they were thrown out. N WATCH: As two of my co-ordinators have moved away, the following is an update of co-ordinators for the Hamsey, Cooksbridge and Offham area.

Fuel charge pushes TVA rate jump

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Electric prices will be going up by double digits in April for consumers receiving Tennessee Valley Authority power.

The federal utility announced Wednesday a fuel adjustment charge of a half penny per kilowatt hour for the third quarter that begins April 1.

The charge will cover fuel price increases and the cost of electricity purchased from outside the TVA system to meet peak power demand. It is adjusted every three months.

The latest fuel charge will mean about $2 to $5 more per month for the average residential consumer, or about a 5 percent increase.

That will be along with a 7 percent general electric rate increase approved by TVA directors on Friday. That increase, also set to take effect April 1, will mean $4 to $7 more a month for residential customers.

Joe Sixpack: Chocolate beer: For Aztecs, not wusses

AS VALENTINE'S Day rears its head, it seems appropriate to examine the unmanly topic of chocolate and beer.

I say "unmanly" because of all the strange, new brews that are challenging our palates these days, it's chocolate-flavored beer that seems to draw the most viscerally negative response from the mainstream lager crowd. Offer a taste to one of these guys, and it's as if they'd been asked to wear pink underwear and sip their suds from Lennox teacups.

A new body of archeological and chemical research, however, provides a completely different image. Namely: Aztec warriors dragging their human sacrifice to the top of a pyramid, ripping his still-beating heart from his chest, then cooking up the beaten corpse for a festive orgy.

And what did they wash it all down with? Chocolate beer, of course.

Half of Scots see Muslims as 'cultural threat' in wake of terrorist ...

There is nothing wrong with immigration, provided that the people entering this country actually integrate with the native population. The problems arises out of the stupid multi-cultural approach as that gives rise to seperatism, not integration.

There are, of course, a number of immigrants who have no intention of ever integrating, or even becoming involved with everyday life in this country. These people are not welcome, and should go back to where they came from.

Incidentally, the question of religion is irrelevant other than in the case of those immigrants who would try and force their views on the rest of us. It is bad enough when some of our own population try that nonsense.

Two traders recovered, Afghan kidnappers arrested

RAWALPINDI: The city police have busted a six-member gang of Afghan kidnappers and recovered two businessmen and three pistols from their custody, said City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz while addressing a press conference at his office on Friday.

Aziz said the six-member gang, including two women, was most wanted on their list and was busted on Jan 13. He said the gang kidnapped two well-known businessmen, Shahid Mehmood and Shahbaz Bhatti of Islamabad Fruit Mandi, on November 29, 2007 from New Town police limits.

The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs50 million from the family members of the abducted businessmen for their safe release. The families agreed to pay the ransom but police asked them to delay the payment.

The CPO said the kidnappers brought the ransom down to Rs 30 million.

From the Bullpen, January 22

It's like the college football argument where we know that Arkansas was better than LSU and Illinois was better than Ohio State; and Missouri is better than both Arkansas and Illinois, but is not good enough to be among the top 10 teams going to BCS bowls. On any given week, no one knew anything.

Back to the NBA Western Conference where the Spurs are the champions but probably couldn't beat Dallas in a best-of-7 (if you're betting against a Spurs fan, don't tell them they are 4-8 in last 12 versus the Mavericks and lost the last playoff matchup).

But the Mavericks are capable of losing to Golden State, Phoenix and maybe even the Lakers. The Suns have real problems with the Spurs but probably like their chances against anyone else except the NBA office.

The Hornets are a nice team, but let's wait and see Chris Paul and David West win one playoff series before putting them down as a contender.
