Curtain Call

It is like watching a transformer toy unfold and unwrap as a kitchen becomes a motel room, then becomes a trailer home. It is mesmerizing to watch the stagehands make the changes. Kudos for this technical achievement.

Written in 1987, Apocalyptic Butterflies may have been edgy then but today it feels a bit dated in its attitudes. A key difficulty in the script is that none of the characters seem overly bright. It is actually very hard to write and to act doltish characters without making them into buffoons or parodies. The result is that while it was a nice change of pace to be in a Scrooge-less theatre in December, Apocalyptic Butterflies ultimately leaves only a brief, flitting impression.

By Wendy MacLeod. Directed by Jennifer R. John. Contains adult language and themes.

Willy Northpole and the Phoenix hip-hop scene explode

Don't squeal like a pig just yet: It's all yours for a mere $60. Take heart that the life-ruining debt you've accumulated for the love of gaming won't take an extra hit this month. The Orange Box contains the critically acclaimed first-person shooter Half-Life 2 and its two addenda, Episode 1 and Episode 2; the multiplayer first-person shooter Team Fortress 2; and the mind-bending puzzler Portal.

Surprising as it may seem, Half-Life 2 isn't the standout here. Though still a top-tier shooter, the three-year-old game is beginning to show its age. Your alien opponents — who mostly stand in place when attacking and rarely bother to take cover when you shoot back — are more annoying than threatening, and the frequent (and bland) puzzle-solving elements will bore those who play first-person shooters to, ya know, shoot things.

Daily Blabber Celebrity Gossip Blog from iVillage Entertainment

So make sure you be checking your spelling before you be posting anything in the comments section. Jamie Foxx: He's funny and he's an accomplished actor, but I recently heard tracks from his upcoming album and they were bad. Not good bad. Bad bad. Tom Cruise: He's a Freak with a capital F. He did give up some good nuggets on "Kate" and the kitten though: They plan to marry next summer or fall. "Kate" will be able to make noise while she gives birth. (How sweet of him.) And Babs said "Kate" is six months pregnant. Also, Tom said he doesn't regret anything he's said in the last year, including the trash talk on Brooke Shields and calling Matt Lauer glib. That's good because I don't regret anything I've called him all year either. Plus: Check out Tom's latest mission -- in Shanghai. The focus of the trip was supposed to be to discuss MI:3, which is filming there.

Man dies in shooting

FAIRBORN — Every Tuesday and Thursday this quarter, Wright State forward Jordan Pleiman sends a text message to one of his coaches saying he will be an hour late to practice because of a class.

"He's very reliable that way," WSU men's basketball coach Brad Brownell said. "We know he has that class. We had to OK his schedule. We've been doing this for five straight weeks, and if I don't get the message on my cell phone, one of the other coaches does."

Davises surprised to receive Good Neighbor Award

When Conway Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Johnny Adams began to describe the recipients of the Good Neighbor Award at the recent annual meeting, Milton and Claudia Davis thought something sounded strangely familiar about those folks.

The couple was presented with the award after almost 30 years of volunteerism and philanthropy in the community. Milton Davis is a financial advisor for Edward Jones with his offices at Toad Suck Square, and both he and Claudia Davis have volunteered in numerous capacities.

The couple laughed while sharing that it took a while for them to realize they were the ones Adams was describing.

Claudia Davis said, "We were very shocked. When they started describing the person, they mentioned one graduated from UCA in 1955, and I thought, 'We probably know these people.' They mentioned they lived in a little three-room house, and I thought, 'They started out just like we did.' It just didn't dawn on me.

Frankie Rowland's in top form

Or choose grilled filet of salmon, jump lump Maryland crab cakes, or chicken with rosemary beurre-blanc. These entrees are more modestly priced.

One of the things you learn early about dining at Frankie Rowland's: potato and veggie dishes are to be shared. Each is large enough to feed a small family. So we chose a potato dish only for this particular evening: Yukon gold mashed potatoes. There are others: Idaho baked (1 lb.), potatoes au gratin, or cottage fries. I once ordered French fried potatoes at a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Richmond and it was so large that I moved about the dining room offering them to anyone who looked hungry. I had many takers and lots of laughs.

Veggies are delicious here, but again could feed an army. The couple next to us had ordered up the French fried buttermilk battered onions -- simply the most beautiful onion rings ever -- but they took home most of them after eating their ample entrees.

Europe’s strategic dependence on Russian energy - analysis

Europe is hungry for energy. In 2006, the 25 EU members consumed 1,722.8 million tons of oil equivalent (mtoe). Nearly two-thirds came from hydrocarbons: 706.3 million tons of oil (14.9 million barrels per day) and 420.6 mtoe (476.4 billion cubic meters) of natural gas. The remaining 34.6% came from coal, nuclear, and renewable sources.EU energy security already depends heavily on Russia. The EU imports almost half of its natural gas and 30% of its oil from Russia. Eastern Europe consumes even higher percentages of Russian gas.

In 2006, oil imports from Russia and Central Asia reached 5.9 million barrels per day (290.8 million tons). Russia also supplied some 132 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas. Rising demand indicates that Europe's dependence on Russian energy will continue to grow.
